Job Description

Overview
A leading multi-strategy investment firm is seeking a Senior Fundamental Analyst to join its equity volatility business. This role sits at the intersection of fundamental investing and derivatives, focused on generating differentiated trade ideas driven by corporate events, thematic catalysts, and inefficiencies in the market.

The position offers high ownership and direct collaboration with portfolio managers and traders, with the ability to take ideas from inception through implementation. Candidates from long-only, equity long/short, or event-driven backgrounds are encouraged to apply; prior options experience is a plus but not required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently generate high-conviction investment ideas across sectors, emphasizing non-consensus views

  • Identify and analyze event-driven opportunities, including earnings, M&A, spinoffs, activism, and macro catalysts

  • Develop scenario analyses and price distribution frameworks around key events

  • Partner with trading teams to express fundamental views through options and volatility strategies

  • Build and maintain proprietary datasets and analytical tools to support systematic idea generation

  • Deliver timely, actionable insights on market-moving developments

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in fundamental equity research or investing, with a proven track record of idea generation

  • Strong financial modeling and analytical capabilities across multiple sectors

  • Experience in long-only, equity long/short, or event-driven strategies preferred

  • Technical skills (Python, SQL, or similar) and comfort working with large datasets

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment

  • Highly intellectually curious, rigorous, and collaborative

Practice Questions

💡Technical Questions (3)
  • 1.Walk me through how you would construct a scenario analysis and price distribution framework for an upcoming catalyst like a binary FDA approval or a complex M&A transaction.
  • 2.How do you translate a non-consensus fundamental view on a stock into a profitable volatility or options strategy?
  • 3.Describe your approach to building a proprietary dataset or analytical tool to systematically identify event-driven opportunities.
🎯Behavioral Questions (3)
  • 1.Tell me about a time you generated a high-conviction, non-consensus investment idea that ultimately proved successful. How did you identify the opportunity and manage the pushback?
  • 2.Describe a situation where you had to deliver timely, actionable insights on a sudden market-moving development. How did you ensure accuracy under time pressure?
  • 3.Give an example of a time you partnered closely with a trading desk to implement a complex investment idea. How did you bridge the gap between fundamental thesis and execution?
🧩Situational Questions (2)
  • 1.You are analyzing a pending spinoff and realize the market is significantly mispricing the volatility of the parent company post-separation. The spinoff is two months away. How do you approach this opportunity?
  • 2.A portfolio manager disagrees with your fundamental thesis on an upcoming earnings catalyst, arguing that the historical implied volatility crush makes options too expensive. How do you handle the interaction and defend your idea?
