Job Description

Fulshear, TX & Surrounding Areas Office Location: Sugar Land, TX Wharton-Smith, Inc. is currently seeking a Field Engineer Intern to support construction operations in the Fulshear, Texas area and surrounding project locations, with periodic coordination from our Sugar Land, Texas office. This internship provides hands-on experience in heavy civil construction, primarily supporting water and wastewater infrastructure projects. The position will involve approximately 80% field work and 20% office work, offering exposure to construction operations, project management processes, and engineering coordination. The successful candidate will assist the Project Manager, Project Engineers, and Superintendents with project planning, documentation, coordination, and field support to help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Superintendents with daily project coordination and construction activities.

  • Support field operations by assisting with site layout, inspections, and documentation of work in progress.

  • Review plans, specifications, and shop drawings to gain understanding of project requirements.

  • Assist with tracking project quantities, materials, and installed work for documentation and progress reporting.

  • Maintain and update project logs, reports, and documentation, including RFIs, submittals, and field records.

  • Support the project team in coordinating with subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and engineers.

  • Participate in project meetings, safety meetings, and field coordination meetings.

  • Assist with quality control documentation, field measurements, and as-built information collection.

  • Monitor site conditions and help ensure compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and company procedures.

  • Assist with progress tracking and reporting to support the project management team.

  • Observe and assist with construction activities related to underground utilities, pump stations, treatment facilities, and other civil infrastructure.

Technical Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.

  • Basic understanding of construction methods, materials, and field operations.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

  • Familiarity with construction management software or project tracking tools is a plus.

  • Ability to assist with data tracking, documentation, and project reporting.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.

  • Strong interest in construction, field operations, and infrastructure projects.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must be able to work outdoors in active construction environments.

  • Must be able to travel to project sites in the Fulshear area and surrounding regions.

  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
