Job Description

We are looking for an accomplished In-House Real Estate Counsel to provide legal leadership for a privately held real estate organization in New York, New York. This role serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and partners closely with leasing, acquisitions, finance, asset management, and operations teams on matters affecting a diverse property portfolio. The position is well suited for a commercially minded attorney who can balance legal risk with practical business objectives in a fast-moving environment.

Responsibilities:

• Act as the lead legal resource for the company and its principals on day-to-day real estate matters and strategic transactions.

• Prepare, evaluate, and negotiate a broad range of agreements, including retail and commercial leases, purchase and sale contracts, loan documents, joint venture arrangements, and construction-related contracts.

• Counsel internal stakeholders on landlord-tenant issues, zoning considerations, land use matters, development activities, and applicable regulatory obligations.

• Direct external law firms and coordinate legal strategy for disputes, claims, and litigation while helping reduce exposure to risk across the portfolio.

• Advise leadership on entity governance, compliance obligations, and legal considerations tied to ongoing business operations.

• Support property acquisitions, asset sales, refinancing efforts, and portfolio initiatives from structuring through closing.

• Work closely with ownership and cross-functional teams to deliver timely, business-focused legal guidance that supports operational and investment goals.

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.

• Active license to practice law.

• At least 10 years of legal experience, including significant exposure to real estate matters and preferably prior in-house counsel experience.

• Demonstrated background representing or advising real estate owners, investors, or developers on commercial property matters.

• Strong experience with commercial leasing, real estate transactions, contract drafting, and negotiation.

• Proven ability to apply sound business judgment and offer practical, solution-oriented legal advice.

• Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills with the ability to partner effectively across departments.
